Stage 2 of 9

Getting yourself mortgage-ready

Lenders care about three things, can you pay it back, do you have a deposit, can you prove who you are. This stage sorts all three.

0 of 0 items ticked

This is the stage where you make yourself look as good as possible on paper. Lenders make decisions based on data, not personality. The cleaner your paperwork looks when you apply, the smoother everything else gets.

What to do at this stage
Pull your full credit report from all four agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion, Crediva) via checkmyfile, see what lenders see
Fix any errors on your file, there are nearly always some
Don't apply for new credit in the 6 months before mortgage application
Open a Lifetime ISA if you're eligible (under 40, FTB, want to save anyway)
Gather your last 3 months payslips
Gather your last 3 months bank statements (current account + savings)
Self-employed? Gather your last 2 years of accounts, SA302s (Tax Calculations) and matching Tax Year Overviews
Clear any small active credit you don't need (store cards, old finance)
The credit-file mistake everyone makes

Don't apply for a new credit card, car finance, or 'Buy Now Pay Later' in the six months before your mortgage application. Every credit search leaves a footprint, and lenders interpret a cluster of recent applications as financial stress. One BNPL purchase has sunk more first-time-buyer applications than I care to count.

When you've worked through everything in this stage, mark it complete to track your overall progress.
